Well just wondering. Are people who fly RC helis switching to muti rotors? Some people are claiming the rc helicopter industry is in massive decline. Personally as far as our board goes, we are not being adversely affected at the moment- in fact probably the opposite.

So are the people who would normally take to rc helicopters being cut off at the pass by multi rotors because of their simplicity?

IMO i think that multi rotors will find their own niche and it may even encourage more people to take on RC helicopters because there are not many challenges associated with flying a quad - ie nowhere near the same adrenalin rush.

So are quads good or bad for rc helicopters.... is the industry in decline and if so why?

Yes I tend to agree. However i can see quads evolving with collective pitch technology (ie stingray). Currently the stingrays performance compared to a heli if you are looking from a 3d viewpoint is very average and hard to distinguish front from back. But having said that, i think they will run their own course - there will be helis, planes and now quads..

Right, @smakmeharder. To each their own..... I simply prefer r/c in the traditional sense: small scale versions of full size machines that normally require a human pilot. (Although, can you imagine what would happen to a human in a full size heli flying full-on 3D maneuvers like our models do? I don't think it would work out well for the human.)

      Drones-multi copter-FPV Vs Helis . Are they a threat?
The interest in Multi-copter that can carry a camera has risen considerably in the last couple of years. From a shops point of view yes they are definitely impacting on sales. People’s perceptions seem to be favoured to the multi-copter because U tube etc. Show the amazing videos that are possible but in reality once customers realize the cost of an autonomous craft with brushless gimbal cameras the interest quickly subsides. So that leaves us with the cheaper toys to contend with. Remarkable stabilization systems easily available to the consumer with things like auto hover make the learning in quads very easy, these systems are also available to the RC heil pilot but at a major price difference. Adding to the excitement quads can and will be flown at any time anywhere without instruction or the need to join a club. Yes there are rules but believe me when you go to the local camera or toy shop to purchase your outfit they aren’t going to tell you as they don’t even know the laws for themselves. Quads are in their infancy at present and the manufacturers need to discipline themselves to incorporate anti flight systems into GPS co-ordinates at legal distances from airports otherwise the illegal intrusion into airspace will be highlighted on U-Tube and world news not to mention these quads falling from the sky in populated areas because of some mysterious spike in the system. There will be a limit on how many failures the law will tolerate for stupidness. Yes many RC helicopter pilots will purchase these quads as for them it’s another challenge and diversion to master. Yes RC helicopters is definitely in decline from a newbies point of as who in their right mind would have the patience to LEARN to fly a helicopter knowing the frustration and the costly mistakes you all have experienced in the past. The proof is in your clubs memberships, at best they are stag-net.
Again from my point of view there’s very little difference in the cost to set up a good RC helicopter to a good quad. A sign of the times is the fact that Nitro helicopters are vanishing at an alarming rate. Another fact is that not everyone can be an overnight film producer as that’s the belief of the new DRONE pilot in thinking he can commercially profit from his new toy. Times ahead will be interesting to say the least!
Here’s a small list of why I choose to fly an RC helicopter
      Fun
      Adrenalin rush
5 or more minutes of focused concentration
      Pucker factor
      Comradery
      Because I can

Thank you @Fredo. I know you own a shop and you experience is a true to reality. Do you think it will be a trend? I think there is so much to RC helicopters that most people dont even realize

I agree. I have had rc cars, still have a rock crawler. I'm considering a plank..... I enjoy heli the most. I stand by my previous comment concerning quads...... not against them, just not interested.

I think I'd get bored with a quad. The sailboats would be boring as well if it wasn't for the organized racing!
