Well i have been flying for nearly 4 years now. And i thought i had most of this heli flying stuff sorted out - ie the hardcore basics, some advanced tricks etc. Well I thought just for the fun of it i would fly my old figure 8s again in any orientation BUT at knife edge. OMHG! Do you think i could do a knife edge figure 8 in forward upright position? Nope... I might pull of one, maybe two but they are not horizontal to the ground. Yes i can do them tail in inverted, infact in most inverted positions. But upright? NO WAY. So all this week I have been on the sim finding my roots again and trying to decipher the figure 8 enigma. I want knife edge in all orientations for my figure 8s...

So all my heli friends, please try this - crack open your sim and try to do knife edge figure 8s in all orientations and directions. Tell me how you fare.

So for the exercise, it will be forward and backwards upright and reverse. Give it a try! You might be surprised like i was.

Not exactly sure of what you're trying to do??? Can you please make a sim video of it.

Sure I will make a vid soon. But to explain it a bit better all i want to do is perform figure 8s like performing a hurricane. Very fast figure 8s forwards, backwards - then the same in reverse. Then the same inverted. I found that inverted was easier than upright! so slow figure 8s - no problem. But FAST hurricane style figure 8s... wow it really opened my eyes. I thought i could do them easily! But i was all over the place with some orientations.

yeah the part that gets me is the knife edge all through the maneuver, that sounds very hard to do, especially from transitioning from one half of the eight to the other.

I'll wait till you make the vid, it might clear things up then

NP I will make a vid. But yes during the transition and trying to keep the symmetry and hod the line. I think many of us can pull off a hurricane, but to do it in figure 8 in the principle 4 directions upright and inverted was actually surprisingly hard!

Well sort of f3c.. but with the aggression of 3d. I was watching dunkan and james dargue fly at heli heatwave and they used forward, reverse hurricanes all throughout their routines. They were fast low and downright full on! quite often flips and rolls were inserted at various positions. But it made me realise how much fun flying fast and transitioning can be. So by performing the fast figure 8s (on the sim i leave the speed indicator on and try and keep them above 100k throughout) it opens up the ability to move fast in every direction. Since trying to nail the fast figure 8s i have found rolling circles easier. So it definitely improves skills... video coming soon.

I find figure 8s to be frustrating! One way things are ok. The otherway things turn to shiz!

oh you're asking for pro pilot material. nope, waaaay beyond my skill level. I'm just your typical casual backyard rc heli pilot. I'll pass on this one.

Okay @Manyc i am slowly refining it on the sim. I will create a tutorial on it once i can actually do it for real! My shapes are shiz and i blow out during transitions or bury the heli when flying low to the ground at the moment during certain orientations. But its slowly coming on. I can do it in one orientation ok... not James D or Dunkan ok but just ok. As mentionied above, i try to keep the heli above 100k in the sim. I also turn up the sim speed to 110% so it tests my reflexes and hand eye coordination and also bump up the pitch and HS so it amplifies errors. Having fun with this however. I have seen your sim flying @maingeer , i am sure you could do this with a bit of work....
