The Canadian Press recently published an article outlining how the RCMP is using the Draganflyer UAV helicopters to aid in their police investigations. As Jim Bronskill for the Canadian Press reports, the RCMP is eyeing the creation of a national fleet of small, drone like helicopters. The plan is to have the helicopter drones fitted with cameras to aid in gathering evidence, reconstructing traffic accidents, and assisting with search and rescue operations.
Draganflyer UAV helicopters have been used by members of the Ontario Provincial Police as well as several US and Canadian municipal police departments.
According to the RCMP, aerial images are helpful for creating two or three dimensional representations of traffic collisions. Previously, the RCMP used a full size manned helicopter to obtain these images, which added to the total expense of the operation. Draganflyer UAV helicopters have a much lower operating cost, and can be easily transported to the scene by law enforcement personnel.
