    "ThinGap is currently developing a series of new off the shelf ring motors including a 7” outer diameter motor with 4 kW shaft power."

    I wonder if they can be used as direct main shaft power source without any gears due to relatively low kV?

    Advantages:
    - 7kW of power
    - low weight (?) - if they have 1kW/1kg we have already 4.5kw/0.5kg in our BL motors

    Disadvantages:
    - looks like they require very high voltage (160V)
    - lack of suitable ESCs
    - high price (?)

    Mass production can decrease costs but patents and intelectual property issues can limit wide spread of this relatively old technology.

      OMG these motors - amazing tech... light and powerfull. Requiring batteries batteries to power up to 160 V though... that is very high voltage - it would turn your heli into a very dangerous piece of technology. And if you used some kind of inverter to power up the voltage you would probably loose your power/weight advantage. Nevertheless, its a tech that should be worth investigating for sure.

      I'm thinking 60 to 90mm BL "pancake" motor with built in planetary reduction gearing.

      1KW/KG? thats like putting in a scorpion 4525 ultimate size motor that only puts out 500W of power. Scorpion already has a motor that does almost 10KW/KG which is 10 times more.
