Yesterday I got second hand X7 airframe.
Main reason was bergain price.
Second reason is I want to compare it with Gartt 700/800.
Third reason is I like the way Gaui X5 behaves.
Last but not least reason... Dunkan Bossion and Tareq Alsaadi showed this airframe can take a lot of abuse. There are some power hungry pilots with 24S setups.
I was little surprised finding that Gartt 800 weight is the same as X7. Without lipos and canopies it is around 3600g.
My setup now:
- Gartt 700 motor 530kV
- YEP 120A HV
- RJX HV servos all around FS-0521HV and TS-0521THV
- Vbar clone
- YEP 20A SBEC
- FrSky Taranis radio
Today I put electronics in it and setup the gyro. It is waiting ready for maiden flight.
I will put 180A HV ESC later in it. If I notice any issues with RJX servos I will change them to KST HV servos.
Airframe looks and feels like brand new.
I have mixed feelings. I assumed it would weight less than Gartt 800. It does not.
Simillarities in design are many
- servo placement
- torque tube
- one stage drive train
- simplicity
- motor placement
- classic landing gear
- diameters, weight, size
Differences:
- Probably Gaui is using slightly better alluminium than Gartt simillar to Align
- 800 has DFC head, X7 classic FBL (upgraded Formula design with feathering shaft support in the middle of the head)
- X7 frame is much thinner. I like it makes allu parts in the frame smaller but difference in weight is not noticable
- Front TT gear is different. I like X7 better but it makes main gear removal more difficult (impossible without retracting tail)
- X7 is better balanced (less tail heavy)
- X7 main geat is tougher Mod 1.2, Align has Mod 1.0 main gear
- There is no stretch kit for X7 to make it 800
- lipos seem better protected inside Gartt frame.
In general I see more similarities than differences.
I did not fly it yet. I hope I will not crash it on tomorrow.
If it will fly better than Gartt I have no idea why. I hope I will be surprised. I have no idea why X5 performs so well.
I am not happy with the fact that X7 requires longer motor shafts to utilise additional shaft support. Gartt motor and Scorpion both have to short shafts. I will fly anyway. It is funny Scorpion shaft is $40 and whole Gartt motor $50.
